Where are the 33,470 Chemical Engineers?

Chemical Engineers (ChE) have changed the world and impacted the lives of everyone.

 

ChE's have created:

 

  • The LCD screen

  • Pampers

  • Pringles

  • The mass production of penicillin

  • Gasoline

  • Post-It notes

  • Adhesive tape

  • Gore-Tex (used in protective clothing for our first responders and synthetic blood vessels, to name a few)

  • Polymers (otherwise your computer key board would not exist)

  • Ammonia (developed an economical process without which there would not be enough fertilizer for growing food for the world's continually expanding population)

  • ...and the list goes on.

 

As of August 2015, there were:

 

  • 142,300,000 employed people in the United States

    • 5.4% (7,700,000) employed in the STEM categories (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). 

      • 33,470 are Chemical Engineers (0.024%)

        1. 22,740 ChE's are employed in EPC firms, R&D, sales, teaching

        2. 10,730 ChE's are employed in chemical production / manufacturing facilities
